I believe this story will be more about the journey to the party rather than the party itself. Regardless, it was an adventure!!
On the Saturday morning of the full moon party, my journey started in Bangkok, Thailand on Bangkok Airlines. Two or so hours later, I arrived in Phuket. From there, I took a bus from the plane to another terminal where I boarded another flight on Bangkok Airlines to Koh Samui. Once I got to Koh Samui, the question was how to get to Koh Pangan. This is where the party was held and also, where my hotel was located. I was told at the information desk at the airport to take a high-speed jet boat to the island. No problem!! It’s around 1:00 and that should give me plenty of time to check into my room and rest before the big night. Only problem was the boat leaves at 5:00pm. Ugh! I took a bus with 5 other people to the other side of Koh Samui ; about a 45 min trip.
Once I got the dock, I decided to do a little shopping and grab lunch. Thankfully this killed a lot of time. The boat pulled up at 5:00 and I was off to Koh Pangan. What a beautiful scene! The sun was setting behind the little islands place strategically in the ocean. This ride took about 30 minutes.
After arriving to Koh Pangan, it was time to figure out how to get to my hotel. I was on the Southwest side of the island and my hotel (“Panviman Resort”) was on the complete other side in the northeast. An area called, Surat Thani. I looked around the dock for a taxi and saw a woman with a Tuk-Tuk. After negotiating a reasonable price to my hotel, I hopped in with 6 other passengers. I made myself comfy on the long bench in the back of this pick up and held onto the metal bars provided above my head. Up and down the hills and around sharp curves, I felt my grip getting tired from holding on for dear life. If I let go , the possibility of tumbling out the back seemed likely. 20 minutes into the ride, she stops in the middle of the street going up hill. A Thai man driving a similar Tuk-Tuk came whizzing by going the opposite direction. He slammed on breaks and the woman hurried a couple of friends and I out of the truck and into his. We tried to ask what was going on, but no one spoke English. Before I knew it, we took off in the other direction. I only hopped that I was going to “Panviman Resort”.
20 minutes later, the sun had completely set. It was dark out and I mean pitch black. The paved road turned into a dirt road. Then there where SEVERAL holes in the road that we where driving over. This was some off road action. My butt literally came off the seat several times. If I hadn’t been gripping that metal bar, I would have fallen out easily. Several minutes had passed and we where still on this road. No cars had passed, no streetlights, no stores or signs of life. I felt like I was in the outback in Australia again. Occasionally we’d drive over a hole so large that I’d come flying off of the bench, almost hit my head on the tin roof, and come crashing down on my butt. It would knock the wind of me.
I must admit that I considered the possibility that I might end up like the victims in the movie, “Wolf Creek”. I was a bit uneasy I must admit. Finally, signs of life and my hotel entrance!! Hooray, the Thai man wasn’t going to take me out into the woods and chop me up into dog food!!
We checked into our room and had only enough time for showers (I was covered in dust), a quick bit, and a bottle of wine each to calm our nerves. Now it was party time!! The hotel had arranged for a speed boat to take guest around the bay (about 20 minutes) to Had Rin Nok beach where the party was held. We caught the last boat out at 9:00pm. Yes, the 50th mode of transportation in less then 24 hours!!
I sat at the front of the speedboat and let the wind whip through my hair. The weather couldn’t have been better!! The moon look enormous!! I couldn’t take my eyes off of it.. As the boat whizzed around the final bay, I heard a faint, “unce”, “unce”, “unce”, “unce”… Yes, the 4/4 beat I traveled so far to hear!! We had arrived!! As the boat pulled into the bay, I could hear the music so clear. The beach was covered with people dancing in the sand. Large rings of fire where lit along the beach. I saw people spinning fire as well. I couldn’t wait to get off of the boat and immerse myself into the crowd!!!
Everyone hopped off of the boat into knee-deep water; I rode on someone’s shoulders J Upon arrival, I could only stand in the shallow water and try to soak up all that was in front of me. The energy was intense!! Everyone was so happy; Worshiping the moon and the music. My friends and I would dance to electro and progressive house, then plop down in the sand by a DJ spinning Deep House to take a break. The ally ways leading to the streets we’re packed with bars. Each bar had a DJ and music playing.
Now it was time to get my day glow paint on!! A young Thai girl painted flowers all over my arm that glowed in the black light. Everyone was covered in this. After she painted me, I danced away in the sand and was studded by a sharp pain in my left little toe. I thought that I stepped on a lit cigarette. I raced down to the water to put the fire burning in my toe out. The water didn’t help! Then I realized that I had stepped on a jellyfish. Ouch!! What to do? Sit down and hope the pain goes away? No way!! I didn’t travel all this way to have jellyfish ruin my night!! I did what anyone would do (I think); find the nearest toilet and pee on my toe!!
I found a toilet in a restaurant down an ally way. While I waited in pain for the toilet, I noticed a guy standing in the corner peeing randomly on the floor in this restaurant. Then two Aussie girls wanted to do a little photo shoot with me because they liked my paint. In other words, everyone was completely wasted!! I just wanted to pee on my toe!!!!!! After smiling for several photos, someone FiNaLlY came out of the bathroom. I dashed in. It was a dodgy area, but I didn’t mind at this point. I positioned myself over the toilet. I looked like a pink flamingo in the front yard of someone’s trailer. The moment of relief… My little piggy got a golden shower!! Thank god there was a water hose in the bathroom. I cleaned my foot off and headed back to the beach. I danced my toosh off all night under the full moon with my toes buried in the sand!! You’d think I would have put my rainbows back on to protect my feet… Not the case!
Around 3:00am, the hotel boat arrived. I caught a quick nap on the ride back. Once I was in the room, I slept another hour. I had another plane to catch to Phuket.. The ride in a bus along that same dirty, sketchy, bumpy road to Thong Sala Pier seemed all to familiar. As I was walking up the pier to board the boat to Koh Samui, I saw the most beautiful thing!!! The full moon was still out on my right side, then I looked to my left and saw the sun rising over the hills. Looking back and forth at the beauty, I almost gave myself whiplash. Breath taking!!!!
Now, to sum up my Journey to Phuket. I took the speed boat to Koh Samui, a cab to the airport, Bangkok Air to Bangkok, a bus to the other terminal where I boarded another flight to Phukett. Once in Phuket, a cab took me to the Paresa Resort in Kamala beach where I cominced to sleeping 14 hours after check in!! The next two days in Phuket where a blast!!!
All was worth the journey!!!!!
This makes the music sound so much better, haha!! The party took place on Koh Phanga, Thailand this past February, 2011. Enjoy my lil video clip!!
